Reporting Abuse

Suspected Child Abuse or Neglect Mandatory Reporting

If you have a reason to suspect that a child is an abused or neglected child, you must report the matter immediately to the local department of the county or city where the child resides or where the abuse or neglect is believed to have occurred or to the Department's toll-free child abuse and neglect hotline.

If you are unsure which county or city to report to, then report to The Virginia Department of Social Services' toll-free child abuse and neglect hotline at 1-800-552-7096.

University Employees and Volunteers Serving University Programs

University employees are also required to comply with the university's Duty to Report policy, which includes reporting the knowledge or suspicion as soon as possible, but not longer than 24 hours after having reason to suspect by reporting to the following:

  • Program Supervisor (unless the Program Supervisor is alleged to have committed the abuse, in which case reporting should be made to the Program Supervisor's manager),
  • VCU Police Department at 828-1234, and
  • The local department of the county or city where the child resides or where the abuse or neglect is believed to have occurred or to the Department's toll-free child abuse and neglect hotline.
